Revamp That Under-Stair Space

Revamp That Under-Stair Space

So, you’re looking for ways to create more storage in your home, and that odd-shaped area under the stairs has caught your eye, right?  Wanting to revamp that area and design a space that’s as functional as it is beautiful to look at?

Many homes and apartments in Melbourne’s North boast that triangular-shaped under-stair space.  And for many, it’s a missed opportunity.  More often than not, it becomes the infamous dumping ground for everything from sports equipment to old toys.  That place where we cram all the odds and ends just minutes before company arrives… sound familiar?

No, we haven’t been looking in your windows: the fact is that if this sounds like your place, you’re not alone.

The question is, what is the best way to turn that random space into an efficient and effective storage solution? We’ve done some research, and here’s what we’ve come up with:

  1. Study Nook

Are you one of the hundreds who love their newly-found work-from-home arrangements? Creating an under-stair study is hugely popular.

Your study doesn’t need to be big to be efficient, so design yours to suit your wallet.  If your budget is a bit more elastic, custom cabinetry is the way to go – you could even consider using bi-fold doors to hide your study away after hours!

For those not wanting to spend big, check out options from Ikea – desks and floating shelf units are easy to install, and modular cabinets can be purchased to suit your space.  Add your personal touch with a few well-chosen ornaments or plants.

  1. The Extra Loo

Always wished you had an extra bathroom downstairs?  A toilet and handbasin doesn’t take up much space, and your under-stair area could provide the perfect opportunity for that extra WC.

Tight on room?  You may need to install a sliding door, rather than a hinged one, and find a basin that’s small and space efficient.

  1. Pantry

If your staircase is close to your kitchen, the odd-shaped under-stair space is ideal for a pantry.  Shelves or drawers; open fronts or doors; pull-out storage units and/or space for a fridge.

Think about how to maximise the effectiveness of the area: can you include a bench and power-point so that you can use appliances in your little pantry nook?

  1. Cosy Reading Corner

Who doesn’t love curling up with a mug of hot chocolate and their favourite book?

The triangular space under the stairs is the perfect place to create a cosy reading corner: install shelves on all of the available wall space, leaving room for a comfortable couch or built-in farmhouse-style bench seat.

Like a more modern aesthetic?  What about installing cube-style shelving, and a few drawers along the bottom?

The options are endless… and so will be the hours of enjoyment your bookshelf brings!

  1. A Mudroom

Always wanted a designated spot to hang coats and hats and store your outdoor shoes?

Under-stair mudrooms are another popular and highly functional concept.  Plan your space well to ensure that it is as practical as possible: think about a bench to sit on while you tie your shoes (or put on kid’s raincoats) and drawers for shopping bags and baskets.

Hooks for coats, umbrellas and schoolbags are a must.

And what about shoes?  Drawers are a great solution here, but shelves could be another option.

  1. Green Paradise

If you’re blessed with green fingers, why not turn your under-stair area into an indoor garden?

Planted, potted or hanging: introducing a slice of nature into your home always brings harmony and balance.  And when it’s positioned against the architectural design of a beautiful staircase, the results can be pretty epic!

Think about how you want your garden to look: selecting plants of different heights, colours and textures will help to create that ‘wow’ factor.  Displaying your green babies in a variety of ways adds visual interest and depth – shelves, display cubes, built-in planters… get creative and enjoy the results!

  1. Pet’s Retreat

How about creating a hideout for your pooch under the stairs?  Tucked away in this little space, you can throw in all the cosy extras too: cushions, rugs, toys and pillows!

And what about drawers, shelves and hanging hooks to store all the paraphernalia that comes along with your furry friend?
