Luxe for Less – DIY Decorating Hacks

Time for a home refresh?  Re-styling your home doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune.  If you’re prepared to think outside the box, you can create Luxe for Less and totally change the look and feel of your home, even on a shoestring budget.

The secret’s out: some of the coolest, on-trend furniture and décor ideas don’t come from professional interior designers. In Melbourne, we have some super creative DIYers who are transforming their simple Kmart and Ikea finds into the most amazing pieces for their homes.

So, if you’re wanting to blow the lockdown blues and get your creative juices flowing, we suggest you take a look at some of these awesome ideas.  With a hefty dose of ‘can-do’ attitude, a bit of elbow grease and a few hours of fun, you’ll probably surprise yourself with what you can produce.

When it comes to successful DIY home decorating hacks, it’s about shopping with a vision.  A particular item might have endless possibilities, so having a clear idea in your head of what you need and what you want the overall finish to look like is super important.

Who knows – Kmart, Ikea and your local $2 shop might become your favourite haunts yet…

All that being said, let’s take a look at some of these super smart ideas:

Transform an Ottoman

We love how this gaudy pink ottoman has been transformed into a modern side table that would add style to any space by Zoe Gilpin of The DIY Decorator.

A simple coat of white paint has been applied to the base and the pink fabric and padding has been removed from the top. And hey presto – the piece is simply unrecognisable!

Room Screen tuned Bedhead

Rattan bedheads are all the rage, but unfortunately, some of them come with hefty price tags! Not this one! Using a simple rattan room divider from Kmart, this clever DIYer created a simple yet stylish bedhead. How much easier could a makeover get? Kids Book Storage

Picking up kid’s books seems to be part of everyday life.  Finding a place to store the books neatly and where they can be accessed easily is quite a different story (excuse the pun!).

There are 101 innovative book storage hacks out there, but these Ikea spice racks by @herhappyhome are one of our favourites. Paint them to suit your overall scheme or leave them as they are for a more natural look – either way, for just $5 each you can have some of the cutest bookshelves around!

If rattan is your thing, try fixing some of these trendy little Kmart baskets to your wall for some stylish book baskets – they’re actually quite sturdy and look amazing.

Create a Stylish Storage Unit

Finding places to store all those household bits n pieces seems to be everyone’s worst nightmare. And for many homeowners, custom built furniture is simply out of the question.

Creating a stylish storage cabinet without breaking the bank just got a whole lot easier – check out this Ikea Kallax shelving unit that’s been turned into a stunning furniture piece by Remodelaholic. Sliding drawers have been installed for storing smaller items, while baskets such as these beautiful Tating ones add a beautifully organic touch to the piece.

Crafty Cushions

Soft furnishings such as throws and cushions are like the icing on a cake – they lift the level of a room from good to great! But as we know, they too can be pricey.

This Kmart shopper used bathmats (yes, we really did mean bathmats!) and jute placemats to whip up these gorgeous cushions. And you’d have to agree that they look like something you’d find in a high-end shop!

Lego Storage Table

“Hello Monday, go step on a Lego” … although we joke about it, stepping on one of these little blocks is every parent’s worst nightmare! Yet our kids love Lego and it provides hours of creative fun!

Well, this Ikea hack by Anyday Adventures is a gamechanger for everyone – a great table to set up and play with the models, and the perfect place to store it all when the fun is over. One of these Ikea coffee tables and some plastic tubs have certainly been put to good use!
